Cadillac Eldorado
The Cadillac Eldorado first appeared in 1952 as a show
car to celebrate Cadillac’s Golden anniversary.
By the following year it was being produced as a limited edition. Production was to continue until 2003
giving the Eldorado the record of being longest running American personal luxury car so far.
The first roll out of the Eldorado was small. Only 532 were produced.
A convertible, it came in a range of four colours – Aztec red, Alpine white, Artisan ochre and Azure blue. The
top was either black or white. The design included a wraparound windscreen and the car was powered by a 5.4l
V8.
That the Eldorado was a luxury car was reflected in the price, $7,750, a huge amount in 1953. The price was to
be dropped the following year as the unique sheet metal body was no longer used in production. Instead the Eldorado
was to have same bodyshell typical of other Cadillacs.

This was the era when the car manufacturers loved to initiate regular
design changes to draw the interest of the consumer. 1955 saw the Eldorado receive a newly designed rear fascia as
well as thinner tailfins. And in 1956 a two-door hardtop coupe, the Eldorado Seville, was launched.
The Eldorado Brougham was launched in 1957. A luxury four door hardtop it appealed to the higher end of the
market, costing an eye watering $13,000. It was produced for two years and sales barely crept over the 700
mark.
